The symptoms of this condition include a mild, aching pain in the back of the leg or above the heel. Though the pain may be light initially, it becomes worse with continued activity and intensifies with exercise. The tendon may also become enlarged, tender and warm to the touch.
The main cause of this condition is repetitive or extreme strain on the Achilles tendon. This can come about after an increase in the duration or intensity of workouts, especially running or jumping. Achilles tendinitis can also be caused by posture issues, improper footwear, or training in areas that cause additional stress on the tendon, such as uneven or extremely hard surfaces.
If you are experiencing prolonged or severe pain around your Achilles tendon, you should seek medical attention as this could be a sign of Achilles tendinitis or even a ruptured Achilles tendon.
