Many athletes and those who are regularly active will experience tendon pain as a result of prolonged activity or overuse. Though any person can experience this pain, tendon damage is usually found in those that repeat the same motions over and over again for a long period of time.
What is Tendon Pain
Tendons connect your muscles to your bones. Pain in this area can be diagnosed as different conditions. Tendinitis is a condition that causes tendon pain that results from inflammation. It is also a symptom of tendinosis, which is caused by tiny tears in the tissue around the tendon. Though the conditions are similar, they require different types of treatment.
Symptoms of Tendon Pain
The pain usually appears at the point where the tendon meets the bone and increases with activity. Those with tendon pain may also experience stiffness in the joint near the injured tendon, most commonly the elbow, wrist, knee, or ankle. Redness and swelling of the tendon may also occur.
Causes of Tendon Pain
Though the pain may appear suddenly, for the most part, the pain is caused by wear and tear of the tendon that has happened over time, usually due to overuse or aging. Those who play sports such as tennis, swimming, golfing, basketball, baseball, and running may experience tendon pain as a result of repetitive motions.
Depending on the type and severity of your injury, physical therapy or rehabilitation may be the best solution to reducing and alleviating the pain and restoring the normal range of motion and strength of the effected tendon. Ongoing treatment can help you not only reduce the pain that you feel but also avoid any further damage and allow the damaged tendon to regenerate.
