Thoracic Outlet Syndrome

TOS happens when the blood vessels compress.

When the blood vessels in our body become compressed – in the area where your collarbone and first rib are located – you will begin to develop disorders that are better known as thoracic outlet syndrome, or TOS. The pain that you may feel in your neck or shoulders, or the numbness that emerges in your fingers is the direct result of the problems that you have with your blood vessels and nerves in that part of the body. But what causes this condition? And what is the best way to treat TOS to avoid any long-term complications or pain?

Thoracic Outlet Syndrome

The most common reason why someone would suffer from thoracic outlet syndrome is because they were in a car accident. The trauma that a person experiences from a car accident is often centered on specific parts of the body – the neck, ribs and collarbone area. That is why neck strains are so common after a car accident. If the trauma impacts the area between your collarbone and first rib, there is a chance you will develop TOS.

Another major cause of the condition is the repetitive strain that is put on that part of the body while playing sports. If you regularly play a contact sport where you are hit in that part of the body, the repeated trauma may cause you to develop issues with your blood vessels and nerves. Those issues can translate to the pain and/or numbness you are now feeling.

Pain in the neck and shoulders, constant tingling in your fingers, a weakened grip when you hold things in your hands, and hand pain are all symptoms of TOS.

The best way to treat such a condition is to seek immediate medical assistance.
