As summer winds down and another school year begins, athletes throughout Austin are preparing for a busy fall sports season.
High school and collegiate athletes are returning to practices and conditioning. Recreational athletes are wrapping up a summer filled with running, golf, tennis, pickleball, swimming, baseball, Jiu Jitsu and other activities. Meanwhile, active adults and families throughout Central Texas are getting back into their normal routines.
For many, this transition makes the end of summer an ideal time to pay closer attention to something that can easily be overlooked: physical recovery and injury prevention.
At Spinal Rehab & Sports Medicine, our team has spent nearly three decades helping athletes throughout Austin recover from injuries, improve movement and prepare their bodies for the physical demands of the activities they love.
Whether you’re a student-athlete preparing for the upcoming season, a collegiate competitor returning to campus, or simply someone who wants to stay active and healthy, now is an excellent time to address those lingering aches, pains and movement limitations before they have an opportunity to become bigger problems.
Be Proactive About Sports Injuries — Not Reactive
One of the most important lessons we’ve learned from decades of working with athletes is that seemingly minor issues can become much more significant as training intensity increases.
That slight knee discomfort after running?
The shoulder that’s been bothering you after pickleball or tennis?
The back tightness that shows up after golf?
The nagging issue that never completely disappeared after last season?
Those concerns can become considerably more noticeable when practices, workouts and competition intensify.
That’s why our philosophy at Spinal Rehab & Sports Medicine is simple: be proactive rather than reactive.
Addressing a potential problem early may give athletes an opportunity to better understand what’s causing their discomfort, improve movement and prepare their bodies for the demands ahead.
For student-athletes especially, beginning a season feeling strong and prepared can be significantly different from starting the year already trying to manage an existing injury.
Nearly 30 Years of Sports Medicine Experience in Austin, TX
For nearly three decades, Spinal Rehab & Sports Medicine has been part of Austin’s athletic and healthcare community.
Led by father-and-son team Dr. Bob Meyer, D.C. and Dr. Josh Meyer, D.C., our clinic combines decades of hands-on sports medicine experience with a modern, performance-focused approach to rehabilitation and recovery.
Dr. Bob Meyer has spent decades working with athletes and has maintained a longstanding relationship with University of Texas athletics, providing him with valuable experience surrounding high-performance collegiate competitors.
Dr. Josh Meyer brings another level of collegiate sports experience to the practice, having previously served as a Sports Medicine Specialist and Team Chiropractor within the Texas Tech University athletic department. During his time there, he worked closely with Division I athletes, including competitors in track and field.
Today, that experience is available to athletes and active individuals throughout Austin.
Our patients don’t have to be Division I or professional athletes to receive individualized, performance-focused care.
We believe the same attention to movement, recovery and performance that benefits elite competitors can also benefit the high school athlete preparing for their season, the recreational runner training for their next event, the golfer trying to stay on the course or the parent who simply wants to remain active with their family.
Advanced Sports Medicine Technology Meets Personalized Care
No two athletes are exactly alike, and neither are their injuries.
That’s why our approach begins with the individual.
A treatment or rehabilitation strategy can vary depending on the athlete, their sport, the nature of their injury, how they move and what they’re trying to accomplish.
Our Austin sports medicine and rehabilitation clinic offers a comprehensive collection of treatment modalities and technologies, including:
- Three different types of shockwave therapy
- Dry needling
- Neuroanatomical acupuncture
- Cryotherapy
- Spinal decompression
- Compression therapy
- PEMF
- Laser therapy
- Functional Movement Screens
- Corrective exercise
- Athletic and kinesiology taping
- Neubie DC and microcurrent
- Cox flexion distraction
- AEIR CO2 therapy
Having multiple technologies and treatment options available allows our team to develop individualized approaches rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all philosophy.
The objective is straightforward: help our patients move better, recover effectively and get back to doing what they love.
Sports Medicine Isn’t Just for Professional Athletes
One of the biggest misconceptions surrounding sports medicine is that advanced treatment and rehabilitation are primarily for elite athletes.
We believe differently.
Over the years, Spinal Rehab & Sports Medicine has worked with athletes and active individuals across a wide range of sports and activities, including football, baseball, track and field, running, golf, tennis, pickleball and Jiu Jitsu.
But athletic performance isn’t always measured by a scoreboard.
For one patient, success might mean returning to collegiate competition. For another, it could mean getting through an entire high school season comfortably.
For someone else, success could simply mean getting back on the golf course, enjoying a morning run, playing pickleball with friends or staying active with their children and grandchildren.
That’s why our goal is to bring an elite-level approach to sports medicine and rehabilitation to everyone in and around Austin.
Trusted by the Austin Community
Nearly 30 years in Austin has allowed Spinal Rehab & Sports Medicine to become deeply connected to the community we serve.
One of the accomplishments we’re especially proud of is earning 500+ five-star Google reviews from patients.
Those reviews represent more than a number to our team. They represent individuals and families who trusted us to be part of their healthcare journey.
As Dr. Josh Meyer explains:
“We take our patients’ health seriously and treat them as though they are family. We are honored to be part of their healthcare team, and their results are taken to heart.”
That patient-first philosophy remains at the center of the practice as we continue combining Dr. Bob Meyer’s decades of experience with Dr. Josh Meyer’s next-generation approach to sports rehabilitation and performance.
Don’t Start Your Season Playing Catch-Up With Your Health
The beginning of a new school and sports season offers athletes a natural opportunity to evaluate how their bodies are feeling.
If you’ve spent the summer managing an injury, experiencing recurring discomfort or noticing limitations in your movement, consider addressing those concerns before practices and competition reach full intensity.
Likewise, student-athletes returning to organized sports after a summer break may benefit from evaluating existing concerns before jumping back into demanding training schedules.
You don’t have to wait until an injury puts you on the sidelines to start taking care of your body.
After nearly three decades of serving Austin, Spinal Rehab & Sports Medicine remains committed to helping professional and collegiate athletes, student-athletes, recreational competitors and active individuals recover, move and perform at their best.
Summer may be ending, but for Austin’s athletes, another season is just beginning.
Don’t start the season playing catch-up with your health. Start it ready.
