BACK PAIN

Back pain is common among athletes of all levels.

Back pain is any type of discomfort in the upper, lower or middle back. The pain may be sharp or dull. Some experience pain while they are performing a specific activity, while others are always in pain.

What causes back pain?

There are a number of sports injuries or conditions that can cause a person to feel pain in one or more parts of their back. These conditions include nerve or muscular issues, degenerative disc disease, arthritis or spine problems.

Athletes often suffer from back pain because of the way they push their bodies to the limit. This could be the result of overdoing a particular workout, overplaying a sport, or a direct physical collision with an opponent. When an athlete continues to play through pain, there is a chance they are making the condition worse.

What are the symptoms of back pain?

The most common symptom is the discomfort that one feels in the back area. If you are experiencing pain when you get up or work out, it is a clear symptom that something is wrong. Some people may experience this discomfort when they first wake up in the morning. Other symptoms include a tightness and limited mobility.

What is the treatment for back pain?

The first step to treating pain in the back is a proper diagnosis. Temporary relief may occur by taking anti-inflammatory painkillers. However, these painkillers are treating the symptoms, not the condition. Sports medicine can help address the cause of your pain and prevent pain from occurring in the future.
